어휘부는 기억된 단어들을 바탕으로 해서 성립되는 언어 부문이다. 어휘부를 구성하는 단어에 대한 화자의 지식은 기억의 체계에서 의미기억에 속한다. 단어는 뉴런들이 신경 회로를 이루면서 뇌 피질 전반에 분산 표상된다. 반면 통사부는 통사 규칙을 바탕으로 성립되는 언어 부문이다. 통사 규칙은 절차기억이며 자동적으로 적용된다. 통사 규칙은 구체적인의미를 갖지 않고 단어들을 형식적으로만 결속한다. 통사 규칙은 이런 절차적 기능을 수행하는 뉴런 집합체로 존재하며 피질 안쪽 기관과 깊은 관련을 맺으며 저장되어 있을 가능성이 높다. 단어와 통사 규칙은 서로 다른종류의 기억이며 신경적 기제도 다르다는 점에서 어휘부와 통사부는 언어체계에서 서로 독자적인 부문을 이룬다고 할 수 있다. 한편 단어틀과 구성을 동일한 개념으로 보는 시각이 있다. 그러나 단어틀은 기억 체계에서 점화에 속하는 반면 통사적 관용 표현과 같은 구성은 의미기억에 속한다.
Abstract
Lexicon is a linguistic component based on words in human memory. In memory system, the knowledge of words belongs to semantic memory which is a kind of declarative memory. In the brain the words are represented by neural circuits which is widely distributed on entire cortex. In contrast with lexicon, syntactic component consists of syntactic rules which belong to procedural memory and operate automatically if they are needed. Syntactic rules do not represent concrete meanings, instead they bind words into phrases and clauses formally. In the brain syntactic rules are represented by neural groups which perform procedural function,and deeply related to subcortex regions. The words and syntactic rules are different kinds of memories and are also distinguished in terms of neural mechanism. Therefore lexicon and syntactic component are discrete and independent sub-components of language system. There are some views that consider both word-schema and constructions as identical entities. But the word-schema which is abstract representation of words belongs to priming, a kind of implicit memories,whereas idiomatic constructions belong to semantic memory.
