Abstract

This study aims to identify the conditions and processes through which humans come to experience technological beings as “relational partners.” To this end, it conceptualizes the relationship between humans and technological beings as a relational process formed through interaction and analyzes the films A.I. (2001), Ex Machina (2015), and Never Let Me Go (2010). A.I. illustrates how relationships between humans and technological beings are formed through repeated interactions and accumulated experiences. In Ex Machina, once formed, relationships continue to change through dynamics of trust and desire, power and control. As these relationships change, the positions of those involved are also reconfigured. Furthermore, Never Let Me Go demonstrates that relationships experienced on a personal level do not necessarily lead to social recognition and that social norms limit the extent to which such relationships can endure. This study demonstrates how human relational experiences with technological beings are formed, transformed, and sustained.
