Abstract
In this study, we designed a PID speed controller for a gas turbine engine using the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). This approach offers a straightforward structure, ease of implementation, and a good balance between global and local search capabilities. The gas turbine engine was modeled as a third-order system with time delay by integrating the Fuel Metering Unit (FMU) and the gas generator. The WOA-based PID controller (WOA-PID) was specifically designed to achieve stable speed control at 6,500 rpm. We optimized the controller parameters using WOA to minimize the integral of time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) performance index based on the model obtained at the operating point. The designed controller was tested on a nominal plant, an uncertain plant, and an uncertain plant with sensor noise, specifically for marine gas turbine engines. We compared and analyzed its performance through simulations against conventional PID controller design methods. Robustness was assessed using the sensitivity function, with the maximum sensitivity value determined to be 1.8427, indicating adequate robustness against uncertainties. Notably, since this value is less than 2.0, the proposed controller maintained stable performance even amidst modeling errors and challenging marine environmental conditions. Performance evaluations, based on transient response characteristics, the ITAE index, and total variation of the control input, demonstrated that the WOA-PID controller exhibited satisfactory performance.
