Abstract
This article offers a critical interrogation of Jack Halberstam’s The Queer Art of Failure (2011), with particular attention to the theoretical labor performed by the concepts of failure and negativity within contemporary queer theory. Through the deployment of “low theory,” queer temporality, and non-normative affect, Halberstam foregrounds the subversive potential of queer aesthetics against the logics of heteronormativity and neoliberalism predicated on success, productivity, and reproductive futurism. This study examines Halberstam’s reappropriation of marginal cultural texts—specifically animation, children’s media, and B-grade cinema—as a means of expanding the queer aesthetic archive, and situates this gesture within four intersecting intellectual genealogies: poststructuralist critique, queer theoretical discourse, Marxist cultural analysis, and affect theory. At the same time, the article identifies and critiques several theoretical limitations in Halberstam’s project: namely, the potential essentialization of failure as a diagnostic attached to queerness and femininity; the under-theorization of media form and aesthetic structure; and the absence of materialist attention to race, class, and disability as conditions that mediate the experience of failure. While Halberstam’s intervention reconfigures queerness not as a stable identity but as a mode of affective, temporal, and epistemological dissidence, it also risks reproducing implicit gendered hierarchies and idealized aesthetic positions. Ultimately, this article argues that The Queer Art of Failure constitutes a pivotal intervention in the post-antisocial turn of queer theory, one that not only expands the discursive parameters of the field but also reveals its constitutive tensions and aporias.
