Abstract

This paper discusses how affect can be appropriated as a political resource for contemporary feminist and queer politics, while criticizing the notion that the affective attachment constitutes a paranoid reality. In the recent emergence of so-called ‘radical’ feminist activism in South Korean society, it is widely accepted that feminist politics should be exclusionary to queer politics in order to construct a solid foundation for a feminist politics. To suggest a theoretical practice against this tendency, this paper first elucidates the problems raised by queer theory, especially by the notion of heteronormativity. Next, this paper probes a mode of affect theory revived by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. Affect theory, according to Sedgwick’s formulation, can be understood as a way of actualizing queer politics by recollecting affective residues. In conclusion, the resonance of queer theory with affect theory, I argue, undermines an obsolete understanding that theory and practice, or theory and reality, are incompatible. Simultaneously, this resonance elucidates the moment when feminism, queer politics, and affective politics converge.
