Abstract

This paper investigates the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle in the Korean stock market. Following the Aslanidis et al.(2019), this paper include the macro economic variables to generate the expected idiosyncratic volatility. From our empirical analysis, we find that the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle is explained by the macro economic uncertainties in the before and after the global financial crisis. This finding indicate that the including the macro economic variables influences on the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle in the Korean stock market. In addition, we also investigate the cross sectional relationship between the expected idiosyncratic volatility and excess returns in quintile portfolio. Excluding the macro economic variables shows the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. However, controlling the macro economic variables shows the positive relationship between the volatility and returns. This finding indicates the including the macro economic uncertainties help us to understand the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle in the Korean stock market.
