Abstract

Northeast Asia is home to continuing military struggles and tensions among regional states such as China, Japan, South and North Korea, and the U.S. The U.S. and China have struggled to determine how best to lead the international system and the region, and South and North Korea have experienced difficulties in establishing peaceful relations on the peninsula. This study deals with an important topic in international security: the onset of militarized conflict. We first detail the concept of militarized conflict and then analyze patterns of conflict during the last two centuries. This study then examines theoretical arguments on when and how military conflicts occur among countries; finally, we suggest policy implications for the U.S.-China and South Korea-North Korea relationships. This study emphasizes the urgent need for continuing efforts to democratize China and North Korea and on expanding the power preponderance of the U.S. and South Korea relative to the other two countries.
