Abstract
This study interprets William Shakespeare(1564-1616)’s comedy and humor from Ernst Cassirer(1874-1945)’s symbolic form. Symbolic form that Ernst Cassirer claims is the cultural form in that human mind shows objectification and intermediation of itself. His many cultural studies are about symbolic forms. Shakespeare drama and humor also are symbolic forms that objectified and gave shape to life of mind in England in the 16th Century. This study examines minds of the day as neoplatonism and cambridge school, in particular, Anthony Ashley Cooper Shaftesbury(1671-1713) coming up against empiricism and puritanism that formed the mainstream in those day. It presents Shakespeare’s comedy as an example symbolizing those mind. In the form of humor, Shakespeare maintains the freedom of mind that is denied by puritanism and shows rational insights into life. Shaftesbury maintains the relationship between this insights in life and the humor in neoplatonism and aesthetics. Both arguments are essentially based on freedom of mind. In that symbolic form is based on the Idea of freedom, Shakespeare’s humor is a symbolic form as the work of activity of mind. From the thinking way of symbolic form, Shakespeare’s humor has a its own and special way and direction. It is a intermediary form in conflicting aspects of life. In this regard, there is a possibility of humor. On the other hand, it has a limit in that it reconciles and equalizes this conflicting aspects. Possibility and limit of humor show the fact that it has its own law and direction. So, Shakespeare’s comedy and humor as symbolic forms represent the life of mind of the day and have a spiritual value that would deliver to new age.
