Abstract

Historically, the terrible spread of influenza caused by the virus mutation claimed many human lives and moreover, the concern about another global spread of influenza is globally becoming a rising issue with the feasibility of advent of new mutative virus. The recent worldwide raging of H1N1 since the latter half of 2009 is increasing the importance of being furnished with a surveillance system on a preventive level. Specially the necessity to establish a concrete monitoring and analyzing methodology is being emphasized in order to make the health authority come up with a systematic plan for coping in advance with the global spread of pandemic influenza. This research intends to discuss the methodology of spatial-temporal monitoring which is to be valuably used to establish a system of beforehand surveillance on new kind of influenza. The core of this methodology is that only the statistically significant change of each respective time is to be selectively accumulated, having the random variable, the object of monitoring be combined with the statistics of self-starting cusum. This method can be valuably used in detecting the spreading portent of influenza. As a substantiating example, this method was applied in order to monitor the development of H1N1's spread by the 16 large areas, making use of Korea CDC's data of monthly occurrence of H1N1 during the period of Nov. 2006~Jan. 2010 (CDC: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Upon analyzing, based on this methodology, the researcher could confirm that there had been an alarm of pre-caution before the pandemic influenza started in Korea and came to anticipate this methodology would be valuably used as an excellent surveillance system henceforth on influenza.
