Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristics of massive open online course(MOOC) in the U.S., and drawing some implications for the development of K-MOOC in Korea. MOOC is one of the most prominent global trends in higher education. With the rapid development of information technology(IT), numerous universities have been able to provide free open online courses. Many elite universities in the U.S. have partnered with MOOC providers such as Udacity, Coursera, and edX to open their some courses to the public and/or students from all over the world. I found some results from this research as followings. 1) Most of the mooc students take this program on the basis of various interests. 2) MOOC in the U.S. allows international students to take elite universities courses through the internet and it enables higher education institutions to share their own educational experiences with international students as well as U.S. citizen. 3) Growing demand for the self- development and lifelong learning ask higher education institutions to shift from the traditional education to specialized and practical education. MOOC is one of the useful ways to improve roles and functions of universities and provide the ideal foundation for lifelong learning in a knowledge-based society.
