초록

The purpose of this study is to scrutinize the dialect forms equivalent to Dalpaengi(snail) and their diversifications. Early studies on Dalpaengi had focused mostly on its etymological reconstruction based on the dialect forms, but some limits are found; the dialect forms and diversifications were generally explained not in detail but in outline, and their coverage was limited in the southern part of Korean peninsula. Unlike the previous studies, this paper aimed to discuss the formative process and dialect diversification of each individual word indicating Dalpaengi in terms of dialectology. Firstly, the dialect distribution of Dalpaengi was examined as follows: the lexicon for Dalpaengi can be divided into four groups - those of Dalpaengi, Dalpani, Godong, Golbaengi, and others. Among them, the dialect forms of Dalpani have been found in Pyeongan-do, Hwanghae-do and Jeollanam-do, shortly in the western side of Korean peninsula. Those of Godong have been found in the northern part of Gyeongsangnam-do and the southern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, which makes them distinctive dialect forms only used in Gyeongsang-do. Those of Golbaengi have been found in Hamgyeong-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do Mungyeong, whereas those of Dalpaengi have been found throughout the Korean peninsula.
