얼굴 표정 연구의 학문적 패러다임에 관한 고찰 - 보편주의와 최소주의의 대립을 중심으로 -

인간과 인간의 비언어적 의사소통에서 가장 주요한 요소는 얼굴의 표정이다. 인간은 서로의 얼굴 표정을 통해 정서를 소통한다. Darwin으로부터 시작한 얼굴 표정에 관한 학문적 연구는 20세기 후반에 <보편주의>와 <최소주의>라는 학문적 패러다임을 형성 하기에 이를 만큼 발전하였다. P. Ekman을 중심으로 하는 <보편주의> 패러다임에서는 ‘표정의 보편성’과 ‘기본 정서 모형’을 중심 개념으로 정립하였고, J.A. Russell을 필두로 하는 <최소주의> 패러다임에서는 ‘표정의 상대성’과 ‘차원 모형’을 중심 개념으로 이에 맞섰다. 본 연구에서는 <보편주의>와 <최소주의> 패러다임의 충돌을 통시적, 공시적으로 탐 구함으로써 얼굴 표정의 연구에 관한 학문적 패러다임을 비판적으로 고찰해 보려 하였 다. 이를 통해 양 패러다임의 학문적 의미와 장단점, 가치 등을 드러내고, 관련 연구 성과를 정리하고자 하였다. 본론의 논의를 토대로 화법교육에 시사점을 도출하는 것으 로 결론을 대신하였다.
Abstract
Facial Expression is the main element of nonverbal communication. The Study of Facial Expressions started from Darwin(1872) has evolved to form the Research Paradigms of <Universalism> and <Minimalism> in the late 20th century. In the <Universalism> Paradigm, led by P. Ekman, ‘Universality of Facial Expression’ and ‘Primary Emotional Model’ have been established as the Central Concept. On the other hand, in the <Minimalism> Paradigm, led by J.A. Russell, ‘Relativity of Facial Expression’ and the ‘Dimensional Structure Model’ were countered with a Central Concept. This Study would reveal the Academic Meanings, Merits and Demerits of both Paradigms, and evaluate the Related Researches. As a conclusion, This Study suggested Improvement Points and Future Tasks in the Oral Curriculum Education and the Facial Expression Education.
