선셋 크레이터는 미국 아리조나 프래그스타프(Flagstaff) 북쪽에 위치하는 분석구로 국가 지정 선셋 크레이터 화산 천연기념물(Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument)이다. 이 지역에는 선셋 크레이터, 레녹스 크레이터, 스트로베리 크레이터와 같은 3개의 분화구가 있다. 이들은 샌프란시스코 화산대에서 가장 젊고 가장 침식을 덜 받은 분석구이다. 선셋 크레이터 화산이 분출할 때, 카나 A 용암류와 보니타 용암류의 2개가 분석구의 기슭에서 기원하였다. 센셋 크레이터는 분석구 화산과 그것과 관련된 용암류, 용암관, 분석 불모지, 기생 용암추, 얼음동굴 등을 포함한 지질 특징이 나타난다. 오 리어리 정상(O’Leary Peak) 가까이에 반복된 용암류에 의하여 형성된 라바 돔이 있고 샌프란시스코 정상은 샌프란시스코 화산에 있는 유일한 성층화산이다. 이는 용암, 분석, 화산재, 이류 등의 누적으로 형성되었다. 기생탑암추는 분석구을 축조한 것처럼 땅에서 돋아나왔다. 부분적으로 냉각된 용암과 치약처럼 틈을 통하여 솟아나온 용암은 관을 형성하고 쐐기 모양으로 굳었으며 보다 단단한 암석에 대하여는 긁음으로서 그루브가 형성되었다.
Abstract
Sunset Crater is a cinder cone located north of Flagstff, Arizona, in the United States where lies within the Sunset crater Volcano National Monument. There are three crater in this area-Sunset Crater, Lenox Crater, Strawberry Crater. Sunset Crater Volcano is the youngest dated volcano in Arizona and unweathered example of volcanic activity both within the San Francisco Volcanic Field and within the continental United States. Two lava flows originated at the base of the cinder cone - the Kana-A Flow and the Bonita Lava Flow. At the peak of Sunset Crater? activity, cinder cones, spatter cones, fumaroles, lava flows and ice caves were simultaneously active along a 10km-long fissure. Nearby O'eary Peaks is a lava dome. The San Francisco Peaks is the only stravovolcano in the San Francisco Volcanic Field. Stravovolcanoes form from accumulated layers of lava, cinders, ash and mudflows. Spatter cones sprouted from the ground like miniatures of the cone itself. Partially cooled lava, pushing through cracks like toothpaste from a tube, solidified into wedge-shaped squeeze-ups, grooved from scraping against the harder rock.
