Abstract
This study reexamines the spiritual and communal significance of small group (mokjang) ministry in Korean immigrant churches in the United States and seeks a sustainable meeting rhythm that responds to the realities of immigrant congregational life. Small groups serve as essential spaces that integrate worship, fellowship, discipleship, and pastoral care, yet structural constraints-such as time limitations, long travel distances, and generational diversity-often diminish their effectiveness. Through survey findings and case analyses, the study identifies current patterns of gathering and spiritual engagement and notes that congregants generally prefer more regular meetings than the monthly rhythm commonly practiced. Greater continuity in meeting frequency is strongly associated with deeper spiritual growth and stronger communal bonds. Based on these insights, the study proposes a balanced model that combines biweekly in-person gatherings with supplemental midweek online engagement. This model integrates the regularity characteristic of Korean churches, the organizational strengths observed in American church practices, and the flexibility required in Korean immigrant contexts. By strengthening discipleship, spiritual formation, and koinonia, this approach offers a practical and theological framework for renewing the missional identity and communal vitality of Korean immigrant churches.
