Abstract
According to scholars discussing the renewal and restoration of the church, those who have sought to renew and restore the church in history have paid special attention to small group communities. This observation implies that the most critical task for the restoration of the church lies in small groups and the leadership that guides them. This paper aims to examine operating theology within Christian communities and spiritual leadership for the small groups aiming to help the church recover and grow as a living organism. First, it examines the role of small church communities throughout history. Next, a literature review on spiritual communities is conducted in order to understand the faith regarding small groups in churches. Lastly, the characteristics of leadership required to form and lead the small groups, where this theology of community is actively practiced, are explored. This study presents the following assertions. First, historically, the movement to restore the essence of the church has always been accompanied by challenges related to the church's loss of essence. It aligns with the history of spirituality that has persisted alongside the mainstream church history. The most developed form of the living essence of the church can be found in small group gatherings within the church(ekklessia in ekklesia), especially in the Pietism in 17th century following the Reformation. Second, the essence of the church is the “fellowship(koinonia)” among the members, which is distinguished from worldly or natural fellowship, as it is a “spiritual fellowship” in which Christ is between the individuals, and they are in Christ. Furthermore, five specific beliefs that operate in small communities, modeled after the Triune God, are proposed. Finally, the leadership for forming such small communities involves playing the role of a facilitator, with ‘contemplative listening’ identified as a essential skill. Additionally, the building and maintenance of the small group environment through a covenant is suggested as the most important leadership role.
