Abstract
Drug addiction is both a chronic relapse disorder and a brain disorder, making it easy to relapse and difficult to recover from compared to other addictions. In the Narcotics Control Act, drug addicts are considered the target of treatment, and what is helpful in the prognosis of drug addiction treatment is the biggest concern of clinicians. This study analyzed the factor structure of the Korean version of the stage of recovery scale for Drug Offenders (URICA-DO) in addiction rehabilitation treatment of 369 randomly selected drug offenders in domestic correctional facilities, and analyzed reliability and validity. Factor analyses yielded four factors, which are the stages of change as a recovery process, were extracted: precontemplation, contemplation, action and maintenance factors. The reliability was .83 overall. As the recovery stage increased, it was positively correlated with self-efficacy, and awareness of a problem, behavioral practice factors (of the K-SOCRATES-D), and was negatively correlated with the depression, anxiety, stress, and precontemplation (i.e., factors recognized as hindering recovery by denying the addiction problem). This shows that the URICA-DO measures four stages of recovery as in the original scale, URICA and is a useful measure of maintaining treatment and predicting outcomes. The results of this study will help to effectively operate drug addiction treatments in correctional facilities by exploring the addictive characteristics of drug offenders and predicting the possibility of recovery.
