Abstract
This article is a record of the academic efforts and social practices of democratic law researchers who seek to overcome the deep-rooted anti-democratic and anti-people tendencies, such as the anti-humanity of materialism, the privileged consciousness and anti-people of the legal elite, and the intellectual coloniality of imported law, that have been piled up in the process of forming and developing Korean labor law, and to pursue law and jurisprudence based on the universal values of democracy. Many researchers, legal practitioners and activists in civil society and labor groups who wish for the democratic development of our society, including the labor movement and labor union movement, have been working on democratic law movements for the democratic reform of labor law, besides in the Journal of Democratic Legal Studies. However, due to space limitations and other reasons, this article could not include academic or practical efforts published in other labor law journals and legal journals, regular or irregular seminars, and policy discussions. For over 30 years, the democratic legal movement of the Democratic Legal Studies Association has been working on the side of the people and in solidarity with various civil society labor groups to implement democratic labor laws that respect people, and has been persistently fighting for the revision of bad labor laws and legal principles. Yet, remnants of the past that must be addressed still persist, and in addition, the democratic legal studies movement bears a significant responsibility to respond to the evolving industrial structure and the pressing challenges of our time. In the future, the democratic law movement in the field of labor law will have to make academic and practical efforts to restore the damaged collective labor rights by leveraging the ratification of the ILO fundamental conventions and achieve harmony between scientific and technological progress and labor rights.
