Abstract
Nation and Revolution-Ideology and Practice of Colonial Socialism, Another Socialism-Historical Origins of Korean Social Democracy, and Beyond KAPF- Socialism and Colonial Chosun Literature, which were published one after another this year, were organized as part of the ‘Korean Socialist Thought and Cultural History Series’. These books explore how socialist ideas were accepted in Korea’s modern and contemporary history and what Korean characteristics emerged during the development of the socialist movement.. Although each of the three works is an independent publication, they are also the results of an academic conference jointly organized by Park Jongrin, Yoon Dukyoung, Hong Jongwook, and Jeong Jonghyun, who participated together in this broader research project. Focusing on this point, this book review analyzes the academic achievements and limitations of Beyond KAPF – Socialism and Colonial Chosun Literature, while also exploring how the other two books in the ‘Korean Socialist Thought and Cultural History’ series supplement the gaps in this work. In addition, Beyond KAPF’s approach to the proletarian literary movement during the colonial period was formed in a confrontation or connection with existing studies of Korean socialist literature and KAPF-related research. In this book review, we explored the previous studies that Beyond KAPF confronts or refers to along with the content related to the ‘socialist literature and culture’ discussed in this book, and once again analyzed the relationship between Beyond KAPF and the existing previous research on KAPF. Through this, this book review examines how Beyond KAPF re-evaluates the significance of literary and cultural activities related to socialism during the colonial period.
