본 연구는 군사활동을 자기경력으로 사유하는 여성들의 증가를 주목하고, 초남성 공간에서 여성들이 어떻게 군인되기를 수행하는지 그 경험을 분석함으로써 여군이 처한 모순적인 위치와 이로부터 나오는 군인되기의 의미를 살펴보는데 있다. 남녀통합체제에서 군사훈련을 받고 군 복무를 하는 여군들은 젠더를 재편하는 군 계급사회에서 능력만 있으면 무엇이든 할 수 있다고 믿는 여성주체들이다. 그러나 탈근대와 근대의 성격이 혼재해있는 한국 군의 초남성 공간에서 ‘여성’이라는 젠더의 함의가 여성들의 군인되기와 결합하면서 여군들은 ‘여성’군인으로 범주화하려는 힘과 갈등하고 충돌한다. 그래서 여군들은 ‘여성’군인으로 낙인되지 않는 군인되기를 위해 젠더수행을 한다. 여군들은 초기에는 남성화 전략에 집중하다가 시간이 경과하면 다중적 전략을 펼친다. 여성과 군인이라는 이중적인 규범을 모면하여 성차담론에 최소한 빠지지 않는, 안전한 군인되기를 획득하려는 실천적 전략이다. 여성들의 군인되기는 군인과 남성성을 동일시하는 군의 젠더규범이 인위적으로 구성된 것이며 여군에 대한 군의 이중적 통치가 모순적이라는 점을 노출시키나 젠더수행의 반복성을 통하여 초남성 공간의 권위를 강화시키기도 한다. 이러한 전반적 과정은 여군들의 군인되기가 젠더질서의 변화와 유지의 힘이 갈등하고 경합하는 과정 중에 있음을 보여준다.
Abstract
This study reveals women soldiers' inconsistent experience and ambiguous position, and inquires gender performance strategies for managing such contradiction by analysing on how women soldiers perform soldiering in hyper-masculine space. Women soldiers who are critical of the traditional gender roles and regard military as a challenging a new career, expect de-gendered soldiering through military ranks. But in hyper-masculine space of Korean army, which mixed both modernity and post-modernity, women soldiers have the conflicting demands made on them both as women and as soldiers. Thus they endeavor to become soldiers in the safest way without being trapped in the sex difference discourse and gain recognition as competent soldiers. At the beginning of their service, women soldiers focus on the masculinizing strategy but as time goes on, they tend to prefer multiple strategies. Their strategies correspond to the dominant military discourse but also shake the essentiality and stability of hyper-masculine space. Thus what women become soldiers is to show in the process of the contest between maintenance and change of gender system.
