본 연구는 여성장교들이 ‘능력 있는 자기’를 어떻게 기획하고 경영하는지 분석한다. 그래서 초남성 공간의 젠더권력과 신자유주의적 능력주의가 교차하는 지점에서 차별화된 자기계발 전략을 찾는 여군들의 행위성과 ‘능력 있는 자기’를 구성하는 맥락으로서 사회적 조건을 밝힌다. 여군들의 능력 있는 자기 추구는 남성만의 병역의무제인 한국사회에서 군인을 직업으로 선택한 동기에서부터 출발한다. 도전과 진취성, 모험심, 자기효능감, 남다른 개성을 추구하는 여군들은 젠더가 탈각된 자기이자 새로운 일들에 도전하여 성취감을 느끼는 ‘능력 있는 자기’를 계발한다. 그런데 여군은 섹스화된 몸을 가진 여군에게 부착되어 수반되는 ‘여성적인 것’과 보편적 군인을 구성하는 규범 사이에 발생될 수 있는 위험을 관리해야 하므로, 군의 통치담론에 조응하면서 ‘여성적인 것’을 재의미화하고 경쟁력으로 만드는 관리 전략을 취한다. 남성 군인의 보편성을 부정하고 신자유주의적 여성성을 활용하여 능력 있는 자기를 강화하는 것이다. 능력 있는 자기로서의 여군 주체는 성주류화 정책을 펼친 국가페미니즘과, 군사전략변화에 부응하고 신자유주의 시장원리에 포섭된 군 인적자원개발정책 실행 속에서 등장한다.
Abstract
This study examines how Korean female soldiers enterprise and manage their ‘self’ in search of unique strategies to develop their competencies in a hyper-masculine space where gender and neoliberal meritocracy work together. Their pursuit of ‘competent self’ begins from motivation when they voluntarily choose to become professional soldiers under the male-only conscription system. They expect to gain self-realization and self-satisfaction by challenging themselves to carry out new tasks, and enjoying their new achievements in the all-male military arena. Thus they constantly attempt at developing their ‘competent-self’. But they also manage the risks involved, the limitations and gaps between ‘the feminine’ and the modern soldier subjectivity. Therefore they turn the feminine into a competitive value, as neoliberal femininity. And they use it as a strategy to strengthen their ‘competent self’ and differentiate from male soldiers. Such ‘competent self’ has emerged under the gender-mainstreaming policy practiced by South Korea’s state feminism and the human resources development policy of the military. These practices are aligned with overall military strategy and the market principle of neoliberalism.
