Abstract
The mass media has recently proliferated the term ‘Eomchina,’ which means a ‘model student’, a contraction of the Korean phrase “Son of mother’s friend,” and “Golden Spoon”, both of which refer to a social class hierarchy. With the increased use of these terms, concerns have been rising that this kind of class discourse may have a negative impact on parents and children with regard to the children’s education. Therefore, it is necessary to examine how parents and children are specifically affected by this discourse. For the purposes of this study, interviews were held with parents and children in order to explore how they accept the class discourse as it is represented by the expressions ‘Eomchina’ and ‘Golden Spoon’. Based on these interviews, the researchers examined the possibility of deconstructing the class discourse and the process of creating a new story where a narrator became a subject against the discourse that rendered him/her helpless. Next, researchers conducted therapeutic sessions with small groups of parents which involved reading picture books and sharing ideas. While participating in the group discussion, parents were empowered to retell their stories so that they could dismantle the class discourse with which they had felt powerless to cope and could give meaning to their stories from a new perspective. As a result, this study made it possible for parents and children to discover a positive meaning in the modern class discourse in which they could not help but be inactive while imposing a limit on themselves. It also made it possible for them to reclaim it as a resource to facilitate progress. In conclusion, this study argues that this kind of therapeutic discussion session can be used not only in the clinical field when working with pathological symptoms but also for people who feel alienated from society in general.
