Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally reshaped everyday life and human perspectives, confronting society with the reality that death is a universal and immediate aspect of existence. Paradoxically, despite the heightened visibility of death during the pandemic, con- temporary society has reinforced its culture of death-denial, treating death as a hygienic, medicalized failure to be concealed and avoided. This study addresses this cultural phenomenon by examining Søren Kierkegaard’s concept of “earnestness concerning death” presented in “At a Graveside”, one of the discourses in Three Discourses on Imagined Occasions. For Kierkegaard, death is not merely a biological end but a spiritual and existential practice that enables the individual to stand as a single individual before God. Drawing first on Ernest Becker’s critique of modern death-denial, this paper explores how Kierkegaard’s notion of earnestness invites a transformative stance toward death that counters avoidance and detachment. It ultimately argues that contemporary culture, fixated on prolonging life through technological optimism, neglects the profound existential value that emerges from a sincere contemplation of death. By recovering this earnest reflection, the fullness and authenticity of life may be restored.
