Abstract

This study sought to find the origin of the ‘Simcheng tale’, which is implemented in various forms such as traditional fairy tales, modern novels, pansori, Buddhist tales, and Tdang-Sulbup, in the ‘Sama Jataka’ of the Pali Tripitaka compiled through the third Buddhist council. The Pali Tripitaka, the Chinese translation of the Tripitaka, the Dunhuang Bianwen Sunja-Bian, the Goksung Guanyin Temple Tale, the Yuanhongzhuang Story, and the Sancheong Anzheng Temple Tdang-Sulbup Simcheng Filial Piety Record all share common elements of filial sons or daughters receiving blessings in the process of sacrificing themselves for their parents, and the parents’ eyesight being restored when they were previously blind. Along with the spread of Buddhism, Buddhist tales that were passed down orally went through historical and regional transformations and settled in various Buddhist cultural spheres. However, since the story of ‘Yuanhongzhuang’ and ‘Sama Jataka’ are not completely consistent, it is possible to deny their origins. However, if we recognize that many Buddhist tales were borrowed and transformed in each region according to the environment and people’s needs, it is clear that many Simcheng-related stories, such as ‘Yuanhongzhuang’ and Tdang-Sulbup’s ‘Simcheng 孝行錄’, contain the tradition and ideas of Jataka, a story of the previous life of Sakyamuni.
