Abstract

In the late 1960s, women's magazines The Schoolgirl (Yeohaksaeng) and The Garden of Woman (Yeowon) published memoirs by people of mixed race, a rarity for the time. The magazine editors attempted to guide mixed-race individuals, through the discourse of national reconstruction, to assimilate with Korean people. However, even within the limited space of discourse, mixed-race individuals did not obsess over the struggle for recognition from South Koreans or live as victims. Instead, they narrated their own stories as resilient subjects. In their memoirs, mixed-race individuals imagined themselves as relational subjects on a new horizon outside the pure-blood Korean ethnic group. They overcame the contempt of non-mixed people, helped vulnerable mixed-race children, and positioned themselves as ethical subjects contributing to the mixed-race community. The value of mixed-race memoirs lies in the way they reveal the self-definition and subjectivation of mixed-race people through narratives distinct from their portrayal as a frustrated people perpetrated by South Korean society.
