Abstract

It is needed to start researching into the self-narratives of Korean residents in Japan genuinely because it is the richest record of Korean residents in foreign countries in the aspects of history, literature, and culture. The current study focuses on various types of self-narratives contained in Zainichi ethnic magazines out of the things written by Korean residents in Japan who have left a vast amount of self-narratives since the 1980’s and investigates the details of their self-narratives contained in 37 kinds of magazines and examines the contents, characteristics, and tendencies of them in each period. With this work, first, the study has found that the self-narratives of the 1st and 2nd Zainichi generations mostly take the forms of male intellects’ retrospection or testimony. And about the contents, they are mainly the cases of describing their hardships they have gone through living in a colony, war, and post-war Japanese society and their personal history mixed with their nostalgia and affection towards their homeland (the Korean Peninsula). And from the late 1980’s, the voices from women and young Zainichi generations have increased. From the places like round-table talks, we can often encounter how young generations in their 10’s or 20’s think about their nationality, identity, or culture issues, and also the marriage, family, occupation, and everyday life in Zainichi society seen from women’s perspective. For instance, the 1st and 2nd Zainichi1 generations’ self-narratives distinctly show the aspects of them building their own identity both individual and collective reflecting Chosun people through the past experience of colonization and transmission of memory. From the late 1980’s, there were more and more articles containing the 3rd and 4th Zainichi generations’ and women’s voices, and the formation of Zainichi culture and discourse, too, indicates diversified aspects. Next, this study discusses three self-narratives as case study and examines the characteristics of the self-narratives of Korean residents found in magazines. With this, the study has found that the self-narratives spoken by Korean residents in Japan within the contemporary environment of each period have been multi-layered text that shows such things as gender aspects, Zainichi’s life, and differences between Zainichi generations.
