Abstract
This study aims to analyze the processes of "becoming homeless" and "escaping homelessness" from the perspectives and experiences of both men and women. Through this analysis, it seeks to identify differences between male and female homeless individuals and to derive policy and practical implications that can provide substantial support for their independence. To achieve this, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 men and 10 women who were either preparing for or in the process of achieving independence, and the data were analyzed using grounded theory. The findings reveal gender differences in causal conditions: women tended to have 46mental illness as a default condition leading to homelessness, with the process manifesting in the sequence of "because they are women" → "loss of home" → "loss of credit." Particularly for female homeless individuals, the identity of a domestic violence victim was prominent, and they often bore caregiving and household responsibilities due to the absence of motherhood. This caregiving responsibility was analyzed as stemming from gender-based division of labor and the hierarchization of gender roles, ultimately placing excessive burdens on young girls remaining in the household. Meanwhile, gender differences were also evident in the process of "finding a home." Male homeless individuals tended to define home as a personal space, whereas female homeless individuals viewed home as a relational space created together with others. Consequently, men were categorized into two types based on voluntary or involuntary processes: "self-directed" and "conformist." On the other hand, women were classified into four types: "autonomous," "family-oriented," "collaborative," and "faith-based." Each type was characterized as follows: the "autonomous" type created a personal space; the "family-oriented" type built a space for reconnecting with lost or estranged family; the "collaborative" type formed a cooperative space with new connections made during the homeless journey; and the "faith-based" type centered their life around religious beliefs. This study systematically analyzed the journey of individuals who lost their "Home" in seeking a "House" from the perspectives of both men and women. Based on these findings, it proposed a roadmap for providing practical and concrete support measures.
