이시다 바이간(石田梅岩)의 상업관에 관한 소고(小考)- 『도비문답(都鄙問答)』을 중심으로-

석문심학(石文心學)의 시조 이시다 바이간(石田梅岩:1685-1744, 이하 바이간)의 사상이 담긴 <도비문답(都鄙問答)>(1739), <검약재가론(倹約斉家論)>(1744), <이시다 선생 어록(石田先生語録)>(출간년 미상)의 세 서적에서 설파되는 상업 관련 언설을 통해, 바이간이 꿈꾼 이상적 상업의 개념을 이해하는 데에 본 연구의 목표가 있다. 기존의 연구는 바이간의 학문과 설교가 상인의 윤리의식을 고취시키고 상가의 학문적 토대를 이끌어갔다는 관점에서 분석하는 경향이 있었다. 그러나 그간의 논의는 바이간이 꿈꾼 상업이 무엇이었는지 명쾌하게 설명하지는 못했다. 이를 극복하고자, 본 연구는 <도비문답>, <검약재가론>, <이시다 선생 어록>에 묘사된 상업과 관련 언설을 살펴보았다. 연구의 결과, 바이간은 사농공상(士農工商)의 신분적 위계 하에서 경제적 공생(共生)을 도모하는 윤리적 영위로 수렴되는 행위를 상업이라고 생각하였음을 이해할 수 있었다. 구체적으로는 위정자인 무사계층의 법과 관습에 위배되지 않는 태도를 준수하고 검약으로써 상거래를 영위하여 이득의 일부가 사회에 환원되는 것을 바이간은 상업이라고 생각하였다고 하겠다. 그런데 주목할 것은 바이간이 설파한 상업이란 현실적인 상행위 그 자체에 관한 논의이기도 하지만, 하늘 아래 마땅히 실천되어야 하는 사농공상 모든 신분의 윤리적 태도인 ‘사람의 도리’와 관련된 논의이자 ‘성인의 도리’로 확장되는 것이기도 했다는 사실이다. 그러므로 바이간의 상업 관련 논의는 사농공상 모두가 궁극적으로 ‘성인의 도리’를 실천하는 것으로 수렴되며, 이에 성인과 사농공상의 위계적 간극을 좁혀주는 것으로서 탈봉건적이고 반주자학인 성격을 띠고 있는 문제적인 발상이라는 점에 특징이 있다고 하겠다.
Abstract
Through a commercial lecture in three books of, Tohimondou(1739), Kenyakusaikaron(1744) and Isida Sensei Goroku(Unknown), which contains the Ishida Baigan's thought of Sekimon Shingaku, the aim of this study is to understand the commerce that Baigan dreamed of. The existing study tended to analyze the Baigan's study and sermon from the point of promoting the ethical consciousness of the merchant and leading the academic foundation of the shop. I totally agree with them, but I have not been able to confirm what Baigan left out clearly in his account of what he had dreamed of in commerce. However, as described at least in Tohimondou, Kenyakusaikaron and Isida Sensei Goroku, in this study, it can be understood that the Baigan's commerce is an ethical act for economic symbiosis with the status of warrior, farmer, artisan, and merchant. Specifically, it seems that Baigan considered commerce that some of the benefits were given back to society by saving expenses and earning less. And Baigan also thought commerce was observing attitudes that did not violate the laws and customs of the warrior class. However, it should be noted that Baigan's commerce is also a discussion on the actual commercial market itself, it is also a matter of debate concerning the “The duty of man” and “The duty of the saint” of ethical attitudes such as Warrior, farmer, artisan, merchant who should be practiced under heaven. Therefore, the discussions related to the Baigan's commerce are concluded that the warrior, the farmer, the artisan, and the merchant ultimately practice 'The duty of the saint'. Therefore, it is characterized by the fact that it is a problematic idea that has the character of being de-feudal and anti-Confucian, which narrows the gap between saint and human's hierarchy.
