Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Urban public sports facilities are major energy consumers due to their large internal volumes and extensive building envelopes, often resulting in high heating and cooling loads and poor indoor environmental quality. Gymnasiums and multipurpose sports centers in particular suffer from excessive reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation, leading to increased energy use and reduced thermal and visual comfort. In response, this study aims to propose an environmentally optimized architectural design method integrating three key passive design strategies-solar control, natural daylighting, and natural ventilation-and to verify their effectiveness through simulation-based analysis. The research focuses on the design of a medium-scale multipurpose indoor sports center planned in Bangbae-dong, Seoul. (Method) The study first reviewed domestic and international research to derive passive design principles for reducing energy consumption and improving indoor environmental performance in sports facilities. Subsequently, Ladybug Tools(Ladybug, Honeybee, and Butterfly) were used to conduct quantitative analyses of the site's climatic conditions, including solar radiation, daylight illuminance, prevailing wind direction, and thermal environment. Based on these findings, optimal shading configurations, window-to-wall ratios, and sectional airflow paths were proposed. Performance verification was conducted through environmental simulations, evaluating metrics such as solar gain, illuminance distribution and ventilation efficiency. International standards from IES were referenced to set appropriate lighting targets for each program space. (Results) The simulation results indicated that the combination of north-facing window and skylights achieved uniform diffuse daylighting, reducing dependence on artificial lighting and maintaining average indoor illuminance levels within illuminance standards. Orientation-specific shading systems effectively reduced summer solar gain and increased winter solar gain, enhancing overall energy balance. The integration of upper exhaust vents and lower inlets improved airflow velocity, reducing heat accumulation and enhancing thermal comfort during active use. Furthermore, stepped massing enhanced natural light penetration and ventilation while promoting social interaction through the connection of green roofs, decks, and pedestrian pathways. These strategies collectively demonstrate that passive design integration can provide both environmental and social sustainability within dense urban contexts. (Conclusions) This study empirically demonstrates that simulation-based integrated passive design can significantly improve the environmental performance of urban sports facilities. The proposed process provides a structured approach to combining climatic data and spatial analysis in the early design phase, enabling architects to balance energy efficiency, user comfort, and social openness simultaneously. By quantifying the synergic effects of solar control, daylighting, and ventilation, the study establishes a design model that contributes to sustainable building guidelines and policy development. The framework presented here can be extended to other medium-scale public buildings, such as educational and cultural facilities, serving as a practical reference for achieving energy-efficient and human-centered sustainable architecture.
