Abstract

This paper offers a Christian theological reading of The Story of a Worm, a novella by Lee Cheong-jun that critiques the relationship between divine and human forgiveness. The narrative follows the protagonist, "Alam's mother," whose despair after her son's murder is intensified by the belief that God has forgiven the killer before she could. She perceives this divine preemption as a violation of her human dignity, posing a sharp challenge to Christian theology. The paper analyzes three central characters to explore this challenge. Through Deacon Kim, it examines the violence of coerced forgiveness. Through Alam’s mother, it probes the conflict between divine prerogative and human agency. Finally, through the murderer, it critiques a repentance that bypasses the victim. The paper argues that the narrative’s tragic outcome is rooted in the author’s immanentist worldview, which excludes the possibility of grace. As a theological alternative, this study explores the coexistence of divine sovereignty and the delegated human authority to forgive.
