Abstract
This study investigates the efficacy of classical literature and integrated arts education as a model for adult lifelong learning. The “Namdohak” program, implemented by S University from September to December 2023, engaged 36 adult learners in Suncheon, South Korea, through a four-phase curriculum involving lectures, performing and visual arts, films, and place-based field trips. The goal was to enhance learners’ self-directedness, emotional engagement, and regional identity formation. Quantitative analysis using SPSS 26.0 showed strong correlations between satisfaction with classical literature content and engagement in artistic activities, field learning, and motivation for continued participation. Qualitative responses underscored the program’s impact on ethical self-reflection and cultural pride. Activities such as Pansori performances, art and film appreciation, and on-site literature experiences at historical landmarks provided immersive, emotionally resonant learning opportunities. The findings demonstrate that classical literature, when taught through a multidimensional and culturally contextual framework, can foster deep personal and communal development among adult learners. This model supports the viability of literature-based humanities education tailored to the lived experiences of adult participants.
