Abstract

This research examines the significance and status of writings by Park Wan-suh, who recently passed away, in the history of Korean modern literature. While Park is regarded as a writer of the 1970s, this view is limited to works that were published in the early years of her literary career. Considering that Park wrote actively until shortly before her death, she should be evaluated as a ‘1990s writer. Park opened a new paradigm on the four themes – critique of the petit-bourgeois, division, feminism, and aged literature – but it was only in the 1990s that she truly shone as a writer in terms of artistic spirit, literary techniques, and influence over readers and literary circles. When the Cold War ended in the 1990s, literary critics and the academic world were dominated by post-modern discourse, which placed an emphasis on everyday trivialities that used to be suppressed by ideology. Korean society was allowed more freedom in discussing wartime experiences but, at the same time, constrained itself to a limited narrative by losing interest in ideological issues. Against this backdrop, Park reflected on her own experience during the war and addressed the problem of a divided Korea in her books, Who Ate Up All the Shinga and To Dream of a Mountain. In later years, Park made a mark in literary history as a pioneer in aged literature. Park proved herself to be a 1990s writer by taking a negative stance on the period after the 1990s through her most recent novels, "Red Virus" and "Stepping on My Shadow with the Sunset to My Back".
