Abstract
This study estimates the effects of the number of annual leave days on workers’ self-rated health status and job satisfaction using a fixed effects model. The key explanatory variables in the regression analysis are the number of annual leave days used and the number of annual leave days available. The estimation results show that neither the number of annual leave days used nor those available have a statistically significant or consistent effect on workers’ self-rated health. In contrast, increases in both the number of leave days used and available are found to significantly enhance workers’ satisfaction with their job and work life. Moreover, the estimated coefficient for the number of leave days used is both statistically more significant and larger in magnitude than that for leave days available. These findings suggest that merely granting more annual leave without encouraging its actual use may have limited effects on improving workers’ job and work satisfaction. Encouraging employees to take their annual leave, rather than compensating unused days, may contribute to higher levels of satisfaction.
