Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out how to do that phonological awareness and word recognition changes in the reading development of preschool children aged five and interact with each other. To achieve this purpose, tests of phonological awareness and word recognition were administered to 74 five-year-old children. By applying Autoregressive Cross-lagged Modeling analyzed the causality and stability over time of phonological awareness and word recognition. Autoregressive Cross-lagged Modeling is a way to see the causal relationships between variables using the longitudinal data. By verifying a multi-faceted relationship between the two variables it has distinct advantages that you can derive a causal relationship. Major findings of this study were summarized as follows. First, phonological awareness and word recognition were significantly stable over time in five-year-old. Second, phonological awareness predicted subsequent word recognition and word recognition predicted subsequent phonological awareness too. Thus, we can see the reciprocal relationship between phonological awareness and word recognition in five-year-old. Third, as the cross-lagged effects of phonological awareness and word recognition from T2 to T3 proved the reciprocity and independence with each other. This study confirmed again that phonological awareness influences the word recognition through the longitudinal data. The results, limitations of this study, and directions for future studies were discussed.
