Abstract
This study aims to empirically estimate the agglomeration effects experienced by firms located within specialized industrial complexes, by measuring the resulting increase in individual firm revenues. To this end, a face-to-face survey was conducted with companies currently operating in specialized industrial clusters, and the responses were analyzed to assess the extent to which agglomeration contributes to revenue growth. The analysis revealed that the average annual increase in sales due to agglomeration effects was approximately 5.7%, with the effects lasting an average of 4.6 years. Based on the average annual sales of the surveyed firms and the value-added ratios by industry, the estimated revenue increase per firm was about 2.25 billion KRW (approximately 2.25 million USD), with a corresponding social benefit value of around 690 million KRW (approximately 690,000 USD). The significance of this study lies in its empirical estimation of the magnitude of agglomeration effects based on subjective data at the firm level, rather than macro-level approximations. Furthermore, it offers a practical contribution by proposing a more realistic and quantitative method for incorporating such benefits into the feasibility evaluation process of industrial complex development projects, which currently considers only limited benefit items.
