요약문】 “우리는 여자로 태어나지 않는다. 여자가 된다.” 이 명제를 통해 보부아르는 “여자 되기”는 사회적으로 부여된 의미의 체현이라고 주장한다. 그리고 여자의 사회적 의미를 결정하는 것은 모성으로 조건화된 “몸”이라고 본다. 보부아르에 따르면, 여자는 몸의 내재성을 극복하지 못했기 때문에 자유로운 주체가 되지 못했으며, 늘 “절대적 타자”로 자리매김 되어 왔다. 그러나 이 내재성의 한계는 생물학적 숙명이 아닌, 사회ㆍ역사적 산물이다. 이러한 보부아르의 주장을 버틀러는 한층 급진적으로 발전시킨다. 버틀러는 몸도 젠더 권력에 의해 구성된 것이라고 본다. 버틀러에 따르면, 권력에서 자유로운 몸도, 이분법적 젠더 체계의 매트릭스로부터 자유로운 주체도 없다. 따라서 젠더화된 몸은 이 젠더 체계의 매트릭스 안에서, 수행성, 즉 행동의 양식화된 반복(a stylized repetition of acts)을 통해 구성된 것이다. 버틀러는 보부아르의 “여자 되기”를 완전히 탈본질화된 “젠더 하기”로 발전시킨다. 이를 통해 섹스/젠더의 이분법적 체계를 해체하고, 담론이 하나의 젠더나 주체를 구성하는 매트릭스를 계보학적으로 읽어낸다.
Abstract
Through the assertion, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,” Beauvoir claims that "to become a woman" is the embodiment of socially bestowed significance. What determines the social significance of "woman" is the "body," conditioned by maternity. According to Beauvoir, the woman, unable to overcome the immanence of the body, can not become a free subject and so has always been positioned as "the absolute Other." However, such limits of this immanence derives not from biological fate but is a social and historical product. Butler takes Beauvoir's claim further and develops it radically. Butler sees the body as being constructed by the power of gender politics. According to Butler, there is no body free from power nor is there a subject free from the matrix of the binary gender system. Thus, the gendered body is constructed through performativity, that is, a stylized repetition of acts within the matrix of the gender system. By developing Beauvoir's "becoming a woman" to the completely de-essentialized "doing gender," Butler deconstructs the binary sex/gender system and in genealogy, reads the matrix in which discourse constructs a gender or a subject.
