Abstract
This paper focuses on three artists based in Paris: two Korean artists, Lee Ungno and Lee Bae, and a Japanese artist Takesada Matsutani. And it explored for the occurrence of ‘repetition act’ found in common in their works. They realize works on various themes, using effects of traditional paper and ink. Using the abstractness found in calligraphy, Lee Ungno expresses a simplified human silhouette in the series 〈Foule〉. Silhouettes remind us of human beings nature, and these countless shapes are repetitive. “Repetition” can also be seen in Matsutani’s 〈Stream Pompidou〉 and Performance 〈Stream〉. Drawing a line with a pencil or grind an ink stick symbolize the beginning. Matsutani repeats the act of ‘beginning’. The act of “beginning” takes us back to what is fundamental. If Lee Bae’s installation artwork 〈Promenade〉 using charcoal symbolically represented the essence of the objects left on fire, two-dimensional work 〈Issu du feu〉 creates a variety of light represented by charcoal. The 〈Untitled〉 series, where can be found blank space, which is emptiness and fullness of Oriental painting, is created through an iterative process. His “repetition” is a way to find the most natural line. In these three artists art works, “repetition” was not an act of falling into mannerism. It is connected to ‘non-thought (무념무상 無念無想)’ or meditation and the process of emptying the mind. Their artistic practice is an act of seeking for something essential and pure which is related to Lao-tzu’s ‘non-doing (무위 無爲)’. ‘Non-thought’ or meditation for these three artists has a deep meaning which is linked to their artistic values. Their fundamental artistic ideas are redefined in France with the encounter of this country culture and ideology and which become the basis for the creation of their works.
