Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate pediatric dental hygienists’ experiences with the side effects of sedation and their coping abilities and educational needs regarding the same. Methods: Dental hygienists working in 20 pediatric dental clinics between April and May 2023 completed a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire items included general characteristics, experience with sedation, experience with adverse effects of sedation and coping with them, and experience and need for education. A total of 35 questionnaires were collected, and frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and multiple response analysis were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). Results: Of the participants, 91.4% had experienced sedation, and 62.9% had experienced its side effects in pediatric patients. Furthermore, 51.4% had received education on the management of adverse effects of sedation, and 65.2% had received it at the hospital/clinic where they were working. The need for education was 4.34 points, and it was hoped that this education would be provided through the dental hygiene curriculum. Conclusions: Dental hygienists require specialized knowledge to manage sedation and its adverse effects.
