Abstract
Objective: This systematic review aimed to identify studies that evaluated aerosol dispersion during dental procedures using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Methods: A systematic search was performed using Google Scholar and three databases—Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PubMed, and MEDLINE—from January 2000 to January 2025. Two independent reviewers performed study screening, quality assessment, and data extraction. This review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines. Results: A total of 31 studies were selected for the systematic review. Of them, 26 were conducted after 2020 and 18 were performed in parallel with actual experimental research. The error rate in some studies that compared experiments with CFD simulations was < 10%. The most common software used for the CFD simulations was ANSYS FLUENT, and the turbulence model was RANS. Most studies set the aerosol size as < 50 µm, with aerosol velocities ranging from 0.1 to 50 m/s. The most frequently adjusted variable for tracking aerosol movement was the ventilation system, followed by air-conditioning systems, human respiration, temperature, humidity, and other devices. Conclusions: A properly designed CFD simulation for dental aerosol analysis enables a more precise evaluation and control of aerosol dispersion patterns.
