Abstract
The Korean church is known for its vibrant community- oriented culture, often referred to as the communal and hospitable community of bab or bab sang [Korean table fellowship]. However, under the influence of authoritarian Confucianism and exclusivistic and individualistic fundamentalism, it has experienced a shift in its identity and values. This has led to a shift in preaching, with a focus on a more authoritarian form of preaching that lacks empathy, creating a disconnect between the Bible, the listener, and even God. However, Paul’s theological interpretation of the Eucharist described as the Corinthian community table fellowship in 1 Corinthians 11 is a beautiful blend of inclusivity, participation, and grace. It’s a call for a democratic and communicative God-centered preaching within the church as the body of Christ. This topic is explored in depth by Kevin J. Vanhoozer, a renowned systematic theologian. Using his theological insights and imagination, he brilliantly weaves the Trinitarian concept of “theo-drama” into the Lord’s Supper and preaching. He makes the captivating argument that “Eucharistic preaching” at an integrative level, which transcends the distinction between the visible Word and the invisible Word in the Lord’s Supper and preaching, is the heart and soul of Christ-centered preaching. It’s a thrilling homiletic methodology that beautifully combines biblical and theological insights. This adds robust value to the possibility of the Eucharistic preaching through the theological imagination that permeates Paul’s theology of the Eucharist. It’s thrilling to see how this has paved the way for Eucharistic preaching in the Korean community of the Body of Christ. This approach, unlike worldly values, offers a unique way to understand the meaning of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ by its biblical, theological, and indigenous nature in the pulpits of the Korean church.
