Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze the meaning of “things before words”, one of the catchwords of Realism in the 17th century, in the context of educational theory. I compared rhetorical and empirical traditions about a relationship between words and things and from it I drew two conclusions. My first conclusion is that the motto of Realism has two meanings: First, it is a demand to teach things before words. Second, it is founded on the view of knowledge that things are more important than words. My second conclusion is that the history of educational theory reveals the change in the relationship between words and things. Words are emphasized, things belong to words, and words and things are not separable in the rhetorical tradition. However, in the empirical tradition things are separable from words, and things are more reliable than words. But, both traditions have a common aim of development of reason. In today’s society, words-centered and things-centered educations have dubious applications. For example, words-centered education has led up to students studying purely to answer the questions in exams missing the point of education through study, while things-centered education encourages students to show off by recording numerous experience activities in their student records missing the value of education through experience. All in all, I suggest that the aim of education should be to cultivate a desirable human being through development of reason whether our education is words-centered or things-centered.
