Abstract

This paper critically reexamines the conventional interpretation of Piagol(1955, dir. Lee Kang-cheon) as merely an anti-communist film, and instead reconceptualizes it within the framework of postwar aesthetic regimes and the paradox of realism. Piagol is not simply a reproduction of Cold War ideological schemas, but rather a product of sensuous and aesthetic experimentation shaped by the reconfiguration of the perceptual field in the aftermath of war and the emergence of new cinematic thought. In early 1950s Korea, a range of postwar American and European films — including those influenced by neorealism, psychological realism, and wartime documentary aesthetics — entered the country and reshaped the audience’s perceptual sensibilities. Within this context, Piagol can be understood as a representative example of how postwar cinematic realism was received and reimagined by Korean audiences who had directly experienced the trauma of war. Through its image composition strategies — such as the use of close-ups, mise-en-scene, and character configurations — the film captures ethical dilemmas and affective moments that transcend narrative delivery and disturb the boundaries of representation imposed by the censorship regime. The realism inherent in Piagol is thus not a mere extension of factual verisimilitude but a form of practical aesthetics emerging from the intersection of sensory transformation and cinematic visibility in the postwar world. Ultimately, the film is proposed as a problematic text that reveals the aesthetic tensions and intellectual shifts Korean cinema had to negotiate in the Cold War era, beyond the surface identity of “anti-communist cinema.” By analyzing Piagol in this light, this study proposes a new interpretive framework for postwar Korean cinema and seeks to redefine the concept of realism as a mode of aesthetic practice that intersects sensation, affect, and politics.
