Abstract
By way of using panel data and models, different approaches have been made to explain motherhood penalty and present its policy implications in Europe and USA since 1990s. However, such study was not conducted in the Korean labor market. For this reason, the study empirically analyzed the effect of children on their working mothers' pay. Based upon 2001 through 2005 KLIPS data set, Heckit model and fixed effect one were introduced to resolve sample selection and individual heterogeneity. The result is that, as for working mothers with children under six, there was 2% wage penalty, while those with children under six to eighteen suffered from 8% wage penalty, compared to childless female workers. It could be inferred that such motherhood penalty comes from low productivity due to child bearing and chid care as well as discrimination of employers. It is urgent that the practical measures from both government and individual work places such as maternity leave should be designed to encourage working mothers to promote their productivity at work.
