Abstract

This study examines the reconstruction process and political distortions of Chinese archaeology from the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 to the pre-reform era of 1978. Archaeological research in mainland China was interrupted due to the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. After 1949, the Chinese government sought to rebuild this field by establishing the Cultural Relics Bureau and the Institute of Archaeology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as launching nationwide archaeological surveys. Additionally, educational programs were introduced to train archaeologists, and academic journals were founded to establish a research foundation. However, political movements such as the Suppression of Counterrevolutionaries(肅反運動) in the mid-1950s, the Anti-Rightist Campaign(反右派鬪爭), and the Cultural Revolution(文化大革命)severely suppressed academic freedom. Many scholars, including Chen Mengjia(陳夢家) and Huang Wenbi(黃文弼), were persecuted, and archaeological research was frequently disrupted. Despite the establishment of national research institutions and the implementation of cultural heritage protection policies, archaeology at the time was subjugated to socialist ideology and functioned as a political tool, rather than an independent academic discipline. Chinese archaeology developed under a state-led research framework, yet it lost its academic independence due to political distortions. This raises the question: Was archaeology able to regain its scholarly autonomy after the 1978 reform and opening-up? This study concludes by posing this fundamental inquiry.
