Abstract
Marxism is the guiding ideology of Chinese archaeology. As Xianai (夏鼐, 1910-1985), a key figure in modern Chinese archaeology, once stated, Marxism is not only the hallmark of Chinese archaeology but also its defining identity. Since the May Fourth Movement, Marxism has had a profound impact on the Chinese historical academic community, starting in the 1920s. From the 1930s onward, it provided significant impetus for the development of Chinese archaeology. Particularly after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Marxism not only nominally guided Chinese archaeology but also practically shaped its developmental direction and content. Through the establishment of various research institutions, educational systems, and the conduct of investigations and research activities, as well as through numerous debates, Chinese archaeology gradually developed its academic system and research models. The most prominent feature of this process was the reconstruction of ancient human societies primarily through material evidence, guided by Marxist ideology, and the effort to validate the principles and processes of societal development formalized within this framework. From this perspective, the aim of this study is to understand the academic orientation of Chinese archaeology since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the Marxist reconstruction of Chinese history as its ultimate goal, and the characteristics observed therein.
