초록
This study aims to re-examine the affects of mobilities in the form of travel diary and/or fantasy fiction, The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices(1857). Tomas Idle and Francis Goodchild, derived from William Hogarth’s painting, Industry and Idleness, emblematise the famous writers Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. This text based on their travel to the north of England in 1857, cannot be classified under a single genre, for it consists of two contrasting people’s travel records, starting with an essay but ambiguously turning to fiction. Above all, this text triggers our cognitive mobility. The travel diary as an multi-layered text which has been left unattended for a while, could restore the meaning not only of the 19th century but also of today which is still valid in the relationship within the text. Moreover, some aspects of mobilities for contemporary paradigm are expected to expand social implications in the Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices.
