Abstract

This study aims to examine whether various attitudes of antipathy toward the news media, such as distrust, cynicism, skepticism, and indifference, discussed in previous literature to explain the lack of trust in the media, are distinct and separate dimensions. Focusing particularly on young adults' attitudes toward the news media, the findings show that distrust, pessimism regarding the future of the media, the perception of the media as selfish, skepticism, and indifference are distinct attitudes. Furthermore, the study explores how each of these attitudes is associated with the levels of citizen competence, such as political knowledge and political participation. The results show that individuals with high levels of pessimism tend to have lower political knowledge but are actively involved in politics. In contrast, those with high distrust demonstrate both high political knowledge and active political participation. The analysis is based on survey data collected from South Korean young adults aged 19-35.
