초록

Tears show the most substantial humans emotions, but also the most fleeting; the most obvious but also the most complicated expressions of mankind’s emotional life. In the context of Christianity, tears and weeping call special attention as an expression of religious emotion or response to a certain circumstance. This paper attempts to examine the role of tears and weeping in some passages of the New Testament and the religious life of the early churches in late antiquity. This paper shows how the early churches describe tears and weeping in particular contexts such as in piety and religious practices like repentance, prayer, and worship service. While unfolding how the early fathers (Origen, Chrysostom, Gregory of Nyssa, Cassian) understand the tears in terms of religious piety, this examination presents that the early Churches seem to argue that tears created in the proper way are a part of Christian life and a way to show piety. And they display that tears are not only the spiritual signs of an individual, but also refers to the communal activity seeking for God.
