Abstract

This study examines how mythological figures are received and transformed in Korean modern drama, focusing on the figure of Prometheus in Chae Man-sik’s 1930s play A time of ritual(제향날). The 1930s was a period in which the foundation of modern Korean drama was firmly established, with various forms of new drama—including realism, expressionism, and popular theater—having already taken root. During this time, Chae Man-sik invoked the mythological figure of Prometheus on stage not merely as a symbol of personal awakening, but as a representation of the collective suffering and spirit of resistance of the colonized Korean people. This study first analyzes the myth of Prometheus as it appears in ancient Greek sources and traces its literary transformations, with comparative attention to works by Aeschylus and Franz Kafka. It then examines how Prometheus appears in A time of ritual and how the character relates to others in the play, highlighting the way in which the mythological figure serves as a metaphor for contemporary social realities. In particular, the fire Prometheus brings is interpreted not merely as a technical or civilizational symbol, but as a narrative of resistance. Within the play, fire becomes a symbolic mechanism that legitimizes and elevates the ethical practices of characters such as Seong-bae, Young-soo, and Sang-in. By comparing Prometheus in A time of ritual to mythological figures that appeared in 1920s Korean drama, this study argues that Chae’s Prometheus is not a personal fantasy or a tool for individual salvation, but rather a metaphorical agent of social liberation and collective consciousness. This suggests that Chae Man-sik did not use myth as a means of escapism, but instead as a way to illuminate the oppressive colonial reality through a new mythic lens. Ultimately, this study reveals that the literary appropriation of mythological figures is not a simple act of borrowing or circumvention, but a creative process of transformation shaped by the socio-historical and aesthetic demands of the time. It aims to propose a new direction for the study of mythological representations in Korean modern drama.
