17세기의 지식과 학문의 통일성에 관한 연구 - 케커만과 알스테드 사상을 중심으로

초록

본 논문은 지식의 통일성이 무엇을 가리키며 그것이 인간의 전인격(whole person)과 어떠한 연관성을 가지며 전인격과 지식의 통일성에 대한 인지가 학문의 통합성과 교육의 현장에 미치는 효과와 학교의교과과정 혁신에 어떤 방향성을 제공해 주는지에 대해, 본격적인 계몽주의 시대 이전 17세기 초중반에 이미 지식과 학문의 통합성을 높은완성도로 확립한 바돌로뮤 케커만과 요하네스 헨리쿠스 알스테드 사상을 중심으로 대안을 모색하려 한다. 20세기말에 지식의 통일성 문제를 학계의 수면으로 끌어올린 에드워드 윌슨은 알스테드 이후의 계몽주의 시대를 주목하며 그 시대의 인물들이 물질계의 항구적인 규칙성에 근거하여 내세운 과학과 인문학을 넘나드는 지식의 통일성 추구를다시금 주창했다. 윌슨이 제시하는 “통섭 세계관의 핵심”은 “별의 탄생에서 사회 조직의 작동에 이르는 모든 현상들이 비록 복잡하게 꼬인 연쇄이긴 하지만 결국에는 물리 법칙들로 환원될 수 있다는 생각”과, 모든것들이 “과학과 인과적인 설명으로 연결될 때에만 온전한 의미를 갖는다”는 것이며 통섭의 최전방에 생물이 학이 있다는 것이다. 여기에서 지적되는 결정적인 문제는 물질의 영역을 벗어나면 기능이 마비되는 과학이 인과적 연결의 중추라는 사실이다. 이에 대한 대안을 마련하려 했던켄 윌버의 경우는 비록 “온우주”와 “홀론”과 “홀아키”와 같은 낯선 개념들을 도입하여 물질과 정신과 신성의 영역을 포괄하는 모델을 제시하긴 하였으나, 여전히 지식의 통일이 인간의 관념에 의해 고안된 개념들에의존하고 있어서 실체의 부재라는 난제에 부딪혔다. 그러나 케커만과알스테드 경우에는 보다 광범위한 학문의 영역들을 두루 섭렵하며 그모든 것들이 기원과 본질과 목적에 있어서 어떻게 통일성을 이루며 인간의 전인격적 성향과는 어떻게 연관되어 있으며 어떠한 통일적인 유익을 주며 이러한 유익의 창출을 위해 학교의 교육은 어떤 방향으로 나아가야 하는지에 대한 종합적인 그림을 제공한다. 본 논문은 케커만과 알스테드 사상에 반영된 보다 종합적인 지식의 전인격적 통일성 개념을분석하고 해명한다.

Abstract

This essay is intended to examine and introduce the unity of knowledge and disciplines by delving into the thoughts of Bartholomäus Keckermann and Johannes Henricus Alsted who, before the time of Enlightenment, already established the notion of intellectual and academic unity with the high degree of completion. Recently, there are many scholars who would like to overcome such academic and social problem of this age as resulting from the excessive partition and fragmentation of knowledge and disciplines. Among them, Edward Wilson suggests the unification of knowledge depending it on the two facts: “all tangible phenomena, from the birth of stars to the workings of social institutions, are based on material processes that are ultimately reducible”; “culture and hence the unique qualities of the human species will make complete sense only when linked in causal explanation to the natural sciences.” And Ken Wilber presents an alternative by employing some strange notions like “The Kosmos” containing the cosmos, the bios, psyche, and theos, “holon” refering to an entity that is itself a whole and simultaneously a part of some other whole, and “holarchy” denoting the order of increasing holism and wholeness(wholes become parts of new wholes). But Wilson gives himself entirely to the physical science. Wilson, lifewise, is buried in his own creative notions with the absence of scientific reality. Unlike Wilson and Wilber, Keckermann and Alsted proposed the unity of knowledge and disciplines with respect to their origin(God who himself is wisdom and truth), nature (habitual connection with the whole person), and goal(God’s glory and restoration of divine image in human beings). The scholarly contribution of this essay would be to introduce the more unified system of knowledge and disciplines in the seventeenth century than that of this time.
