고전기 아테네에는 종교적 불경죄로 인해 타의에서건 자의에서건 조국 아테네를 떠나 해외에서 유랑하는 소위 종교적 추방자들이 상당수 존재했다. 종교적 추방자들의 사례 중에서 가장 많은 수의 추방자들이 생겨난 것은 기원전 415년의 헤르메스상 손상과 엘레우시스 비의우롱 사건 때였다. 전하기로는 그 두 사건에 관련된 추방자들 수는 최소 30명이었다고 한다. 이들 추방자들은 조국으로의 귀환을 간절히 열망했으며, 늦어도 기원전 403년의 사면령 이후에는 조국에 돌아올 수 있었다. 필자는 이들 종교적 추방자들의 귀환 이후 행적에 주목하고자 한다. 물론 이들의 추방 과정에는 종교적 이유뿐 아니라 정치적 혹은 개인적 이유도 함께 작용했을 수 있지만, 추방자들이 귀환 이후에 어떤 식으로든 종교적 의미를 내포한 행적을 보이지 않았을까 하는 생각에서이다. 이는 고전기 아테네 사회에서의 신앙의 중요성과 영향력을 파악할 수 있는 유익한 단서가 된다고 본다. 기원전 415년의 추방자들 가운데 귀환 이후 행적을 어느 정도 파악할 수 있는 경우는 알키비아데스와 안도키데스 뿐이다. 알키비아데스는 기원전 407년에, 안도키데스는 기원전 403년경에 귀환했을 것으로 보이는데, 그들은 귀환 이후 매우 유사한 행적을 남겼다. 그들이 귀환 직후 아테네에서 행한 행동은 자신들이 과거에 불경을 저질렀던 바로 그 신들과 관련된 것이었다. 엘레우시스 비의 우롱 때문에 추방된 알키비아데스는 비의 행렬을 호위하기 위해 4달이나 기다렸고, 헤르메스상 손상에 관여한 안도키데스는 아르키포스를 헤르메스상 모욕죄로 고소했다. 필자는 그런 행동이 과거의 불경 행위로 인한 오명을 순화시키고 자신들의 경건함을 공중에게 알리려는 것이었다고 본다. 필자는 기원전 415년의 도망자들이, 그들의 불경에 대한 정화를 요구하는 국가나 사회의 공식적인 요청이 없었다고 해도, 자신들을 스스로 정화하려는 개인적인 열망에서 자유롭지 못했던 것이라고 본다. 그들의 귀환 직후 행동은 그런 열망을 반영한 것이었다.
